Cosmic Disco; 2024; Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller
Cosmic Disco; 2024; a 1 minute excerpt from a 20 minute loop; programmed light and motion synced with audio
There are three elements in this work.. the altered mirror-balls, the lighting, and the audio.
The speed and direction of each globe, as well as the numerous different lighting cues, are controlled by a computer. The reflections on the walls suggest deep space but they change to look like floating space junk, nebulas or satellites. One section has giant bubbles appearing and moving around the walls. These bubbles refer in an interesting way to a real phenomenon of ‘space bubbles’, fossilized remnants from the Big Bang.*
The sound, played back on 4 speakers is taken from recordings from the Voyager I and II which were launched in 1977. Antennae on the probes recorded the interactions of the solar wind, electrically charged particles emitted by the sun, with the magnetic fields of planets and moons in our solar system. As the stream of particles strikes the magnetospheres, distinctive vibrations are created that, although inaudible in the vacuum of space, fall within the range of human hearing and can be played back as sound on Earth.** We decided to work with these soundscapes and edited together several of them creating an eerie ethereal environment. There are also some inserted bits of music sampled from ‘the Golden Record’ which was an album with sounds and music sent with the Voyager spacecrafts in 1977 meant as a ‘Time Capsule’ to communicate with any potential aliens. These tiny bits of music are only heard occasionally as they seemingly float by lost in space.
*Cosmologist Jim Peebles theorized that in the primordial universe (then a stew of hot plasma) the churning of gravity and radiation created sound waves called baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs). As the sound waves rippled through the plasma, they created bubbles. Approximately 380,000 years after the Big Bang, the process stopped as the universe cooled down, freezing the shape of the bubbles. The bubbles then grew larger as the universe expanded, similar to other fossilized remnants from the time after the Big Bang.”

The sixth century BCE, Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras posited his theory of the music of the spheres. The sun, moon, and other heavenly bodies, he believed, each emit a unique tone based on their distance from each other and orbital revolutions that together form a harmonious symphony that expresses the underlying order of the cosmos.

Conversation with Antonello

We were asked to create a soundtrack for any work in The National Gallery's collection for the show "Soundscapes". We chose the painting St. Jerome in His Study; 1460-1475; by Antonello da Messina. Inspired by this work, we decided to not only create a sound piece but also a sculpture that would attempt to recreate the space within the painting. This became a slightly obsessive, perhaps impossi...

I used to work with Janet, in '85-'87 at the AGO. I certainly remember her cheerful smiling positive loveliness as we silkscreened kid's paper stencils with black ink during school visits to our department. I had a crush I suppose. Who wouldn't? I was so happy to learn of her great success. She is an exceptional artist. Gracious and kind. Fun to be with. Not snobby or fussy. One of my favourite people . Bravo to you both!

I actually can't remember how the recording for the video was made. Don't think it was binaural actually, but it might be... I think the movement you're hearing was the stereo mic moving through the installation. If you experience the piece installed you can get the same effect by walking around the speakers and creating your own mix of the piece, which is what I like to do. If you sit in the middle you're physically surrounded by Tallis' compostion as he engages the space by using different singer's at different times in a completely 3 dimensional way. It's great this way as well. For me, its always a disappointment to hear the piece over two speakers on youtube... or even on a good stereo, sorry, G.B.M.

This makes me happy. 😄 For many reasons. Main one I suppose is the idea that distinct vibrations that can't be heard in the vacuum of space can be translated (decoded?) into a range for human hearing. Not sure what that means at all, but it's dang cosmic!

impressive sound works, as they are millions of sounds you have good resource to work with, I like your other works Osaka symphony, pendemonium, infinity machine and many others, brilliant sound works, Storm Room is effective in many ways to show how powerful the nature is the rain that can drown cities and sounds of thunder that can fill one with terror... I admire your work.thats all...

Looking forward to seeing this next month when in New York. Another classic work by Janet and George that transports us into a world of their making, disturbingly similar to ours. And I loved the self-quotation! But it too is disturbing...the 40 Part Motet installed in some bleak space, and someone has toppled the speakers and interrupted the installation...
